Usually a coach that is only coaching at a higher level only because his son can't make any other rep team and doesn't know how to access his team and help on making improvements where needed ( the house league coach)

Whose fault is it to hire this coach? The organization's? That may be what is bringing down minor hockey... Perhaps the real coach is avoiding the politics... and the crazy parents...

The org is only as strong as it's members. And yes - coaches by the droves are avoiding crazy parents. I know of at least 5 coaches who are walking away from the game this year alone for this very reason. Be proud parents............you're helping your kids.............not.

I think it's sometimes the paid coaches that only care about the money and not the kids. Tryouts are a joke and kids do not make the team based on merit. They run their own schools or hockey camps on the side which have the unwritten obligation to attend. They only show up a few minutes before game time and leave right after. They don't communicate anything to the parents and assume they're idiots. Kids are benched or sparsely played in favour of the money men's kids.

Totally agree!
Parents are the ones bringing minor hockey down.
Volunteer parents are a huge help up to AAA MPW. After that, they should step aside and let the pros take over.
(Unless you're an NHL alumni)
Coaches comes in all shapes, sizes and temperaments - and it's up to parents to find the right one for their son/daughter.
Resume, track record, references... I think parents pay more attention(and less money) to buying a car than they do picking the right
environment for their children to play hockey in. Those who jump in blindly(or intentionally) into a toxic team, with a coach that is abusive to a developing adolescent mind do so at what cost?
Has your boss ever emptied the garbage on your desk and said you were no better than this pile of junk?
Has a police officer ever made you write with a marker a big L on your own forehead?
Ultimately parents are keeping bad coaches in the system.

Sounds like a typical GTHL parent who thinks the GTHL is all there is to hockey. Some parents can't choose their kid's coaches. They have to play where they live and deal with whatever coach is available.
