An earlier point was bang on. Know which camp you are in. For an average AAA player, signing a card now with a lower ranked team may be better than waiting for a mid-pack team card come August and September that may never come.

In general the quality of Midget AAA has improved over the last few years. Quality spots taken up earlier. Not as many gems come back in August from junior as some may think.

JRC will be Top Team. They won OHL Cup with their 02’s.

They may be tops in depletion of the parents bank accounts by the coaches. Not sure that translates to the standings though.

Cow has great coaching and a good program....that alone should attract top players. Clarington recently had a coaching change - will be interesting to see what happens over there. Whitby is the dark horse - head coach has never coached before and I heard the same thing - parent running the show.

Agreed. 6:39 clearly doesn’t know that bench staff

The 02 coaches that won OHL Cup are not coaching the Midget team.
The good 02 players that won the OHL Cup are not playing Midget hockey.

Do your homework before signing up to pick play Midget with JRC.

Do your homework for all teams. Midget is mediocre. All the top players will play OHL or Junior.

Only partially correct. They may be on OHL or Junior teams. Not many will PLAY much. A decent Midget program makes sehse for alot of kids. Fewer kids are ready for junior than their parents think.

“decent” midget programs. Do these exist in the G? Lots of snake oil salesmen and those who “think” they have decent programs.

Let’s face it. midget is about squeezing more moneu out of your wallet. Not much else.

Is there anything about hockey that isn't about squeezing money out of your wallet? The avalanche of junior prospect camps, combines, college camps werent free of charge either I noticed.

No need to dump on midget. Its not like there is even a choice unless you are one of the few kids that can land a 16 year old card. For most its midget or nothing.

All the top 02’s will play ohl or jr a ??? You mean they might sign and practice only, good luck parents, you might want to lock up a midget spot, its ok, you’ll get over it after the main camps in Aug and realize little johnny cannot handle mans strength

There are only two 16yr old cards per team in jr. a so spots are very limited. Some teams may trade for or buy add'l cards. They usually go to select kids who are just beyond staying on an ohl roster or ncaa commits who want to maintain eligibility (also very high end kids). And many of those 16yr old players who get jr. a cards still have trouble getting ice time. They are playing against others who are 17-20yrs old and the jr coaches want to win. Unless you think your son is going to be good enough to help the team win don't expect much ice.

In the OJHL teams cannot trade for or purchase underage cards. So days are gone.

Each team gets two underage cards. If they do not want to use them the cards go back to the league. junior teams wishing to get additional underage cards can then apply to secure any cards that may have been handed back to the league.

There is a date for unused cards to be handed in, not sure what that date is but would have to be in late August or September.

Thus, no JR team in OJHL can commit to more than 2 underage players at this time. If they have they are risking not getting an additional card.

If you are an 02 player committed to an OJHL team make sure you sign a card.

Buyer beware.

Midget is squeezing money?

JR teams charge $300 for rookie camp, ask rookies to play on their developmental spring/summer team and then when you sign a JR card they give you a $7500 invoice for registration.

JR A is a money grab extension of minor hockey

Lot of money to sit on the bench or in the stands playing jr.a at 16yrs old. Unless you are good enough to play regularly buyer beware.

Unless you are 1st and 2nd round picks in the OHL, good luck getting a spot in the O. Only a few of the rest will have a chance. For the rest, good luck with Jr A. Even less will make this level as a 16yr old. Don't believe me? Check the current rosters and the games played for those kids. Don't forget the vast majority that do play barely get ice time. Most parents haven't done their homework. We did. Better to be AP'ed (if you don't mind paying a rip off fee for that one game, at most, your son will play), practise with the Jr A team and gets lots of ice in Midget AAA. Just some words to consider.

$500 to be an AP player is a good deal better than paying $5500 and sitting for most of the year
